Metasploit 4 Advances Enterprise Security

Because there are a lot of different points of entry and attack in a modern enterprise IT network environment, security vendor Rapid 7 this week released Metasploit 4.0 advancing both the commercial and open source versions of their penetration testing framework. Metasploit 4.0 marks a significant shift over the Metasploit 3.x branch that first debuted back in March of 2007.

HD Moore, Rapid7′s chief security officer and Metasploit chief architect explained to that the use case for Metasploit has moved from a thin launcher around the exploit repository to an all-in-one penetration testing toolkit.

Texas-based technology company PersonalWeb claims to have patented technology “that is fundamental for many important elements of cloud computing technology, distributed search engine file systems, social media and content addressable storage.”

The company has revealed that it has filed patent infringement suits against several large or well-known IT companies.

DISA details streamlining plan for 2012

The Defense Information Systems Agency is taking on the Defense Department’s fragmented IT services as its top priority for 2012, with some new initiatives getting underway and some more familiar efforts that are gaining traction despite hurdles that have cropped up along the way.

“We’re focusing on enterprise services as our number one priority,” said Tony Montemarano, DISA director for strategic planning and information. “We’re trying to get [DOD] up to the 21st century – that is, centrally operating, enterprise IT capabilities.”

Montemarano spoke as part of a DISA panel hosted by AFCEA DC in Arlington, Va., on Jan. 17.

New CEO

Thompson was unveiled as Yahoo!’s new CEO before market open on Wednesday, ending a four-month search that followed the ouster of his controversial predecessor, Carol Bartz. Thompson most recently served as president of PayPal, a unit of eBay(EBAY). PayPal President Scott Thompson has been appointed CEO of Yahoo!

Speaking during a conference call with analysts on Wednesday, Thompson explained that he wants to improve Yahoo!’s ability to serve both users and advertising partners.

“One of the great things that we were able to achieve at PayPal was balancing the consumer need with the merchant need,” he explained. Read full post here…
